TradeRiver was founded in 2011 as alternative to conventional banking facilities and an addition to traditional trade finance. We provide a source of non-recourse working capital to enable companies to act as cash buyers.
We have provided over £145M of working capital finance to businesses in the UK. We also recently opened an office in Baltimore, USA serving the US market.

John retired as a Partner in EY LLP in February 2011, having run its Global Client Strategy for three years and then its Global Private Equity group. He is currently a Member of the Panel of the Competition Commission, the Higher Education Funding Council Audit and Strategic Committees, Deputy Chairman of the University of Brighton and a Senior Advisor to Alvarez & Marsal for the Private Equity sector. He also chairs the Kent Investor Network, which provides Business Angel finance, and is an Advisory Board Member of Committed Capital, which provides Development Capital to SMEs.
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
From 2003, Richard was COO of a Bahrain-based USD 400 million turnover UK-listed trade finance company. He has extensive knowledge and experience of the global credit insurance market and enjoys close relationships with all the major insurers. Prior to this, Richard had 25 years’ experience in hotel management operations with Sheraton Hotels Middle East – becoming the group’s youngest General Manager at 29. His postings included Iraq, Abu Dhabi and Cairo as well as 15 years as General Manager of Sheraton Jeddah, Bahrain and Amman hotels.
CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
Paula joined the TradeRiver team in 2014, bringing over 20 years of experience in finance with her. She is an ICAEW Chartered Accountant, and has previously worked at BDO Stoy Hayward as an audit manager and on the corporate finance team before moving on to become the Finance Director of a residential property company.
REGIONAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
John joined TradeRiver in 2016 and brings with him a wealth of experience from both financial services and the wider commercial world, having worked at both Barclays and HSBC. He has had extensive exposure to small and mid-sized companies, providing business finance solutions to manage cash flow and support growth, both domestically and internationally. John believes in being in-depth in his approach and truly understanding a business, so that he can provide the most suitable solution. He has thrived on developing strong relationships and ensuring the needs of his clients are being met to help them achieve their full potential.
REGIONAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
Max Joined TradeRiver in 2013 having graduated from Leeds University. As one of the first employees he has had exposure to all facets of the business and experienced much of the company’s growth. Rising his way through the ranks of back office administrator, Max’s current responsibilities include the management of client accounts and client acquisitions.
Andrew joined TradeRiver in 2016 following a successful 32 year career at RBS. Most of his career was spent in risk related areas. His last role within RBS was Head of Corporate Financial Analysis where he obtained considerable experience of analysing and assessing a wide range of companies across multiple sectors within the UK. His main role in TradeRiver is to support Mike Burrage, Head of Credit, in the review and approval of new proposals as well as the ongoing monitoring and control of the existing portfolio.
Mike works mainly in the operational side of the company, tracking payments, processing transactions and assisting with the on-boarding process. He graduated from the University of Liverpool with a 1st class honours degree in Business Studies and spent his placement year working for an international university in Suzhou, China where he wrote copy for the university’s physical and digital marketing.
